Years 2004-2005 Annual Report for the City of Mercer Island
Water Quality Monitoring in Five Drainage Basins: 6, 10, 26, 32, and 42
Since 1999, the King County Water and Land Resources Division (WLRD) has provided technical assistance to the City of Mercer Island to evaluate water and sediment quality within the main watercourses of several of the City’s 54 drainage basins just prior to their discharge to Lake Washington. This report presents the results of WLRD’s efforts for 2004-2005 and provides a comparison to results from 2003. WLRD monitored water quality during four storm events each year in five basins selected by the City: two dominated by commercial centers and three with erosive ravines adjacent to residential neighborhoods. Parameters measured included conventionals (temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, conductivity, turbidity, total suspended solids, and nutrients), coliform bacteria, metals (copper, lead, zinc, and chromium), petroleum compounds, herbicides, and pesticides. Measurements were compared with State of Washington water quality standards where available. WLRD also conducted annual monitoring of metal levels in sediments, and number, types, and diversity of benthic macroinvertebrates in the five basins during summer low flow conditions. The City will use the data to support their Phase 2 National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit, and to target homeowner and business owner source control and education measures to prevent and reduce the discharge of pollutants to Mercer Island streams and ultimately Lake Washington.
